What is an essay?
An essay is a piece of writing where you can convey your thoughts, describe something, share an experience, make arguments for or against something, etc. It is mostly a non-fictional piece.
Steps to write an essay
Decide the topic of the essay. It can either be one of your interests, or something your teacher has given you. But, you need to be sure about what the intent of the essay is and what type of essay it is going to be.
Write down everything you can think of relevant to your essay. You don’t need to emphasize the grammar, or sequence yet. Simply let ideas flow onto the paper or the computer screen. Once you decide the flow, start writing, check with grammar errors and punctuations.
Do some research. Depending upon what you choose to write about, you can consult with books, other people, and the internet. Note down the relevant information from those sources and write them down in your own words.
Structure your essay. Now that you have all the information and ideas you would like to put in your essay, begin to put them into a logical sequence. While you have to use an introduction, and a conclusion, you have room to play within the body of the essay. To make it attractive, and easy to read, use headings, and subheadings. Similarly, see if you can put some of the information using bullet points or number lists.
Revisit the essay after a break. When you come back to it, you may get some newer ideas or may find inspiration to refine what you have written till now. The creative process may be a little funny, but this works for a lot of writers. The break helps them come up with unexpected insights and connections.
Edit your essay. Now is the time to pick up the metaphorical scissors and cut out the unnecessary bits, make spell checks, work on grammatical errors, correct the punctuations, and check if there is any mistake in the information shared.
Ask someone else to review it. When another pair of eyes look at the essay, they may point out mistakes you may have overlooked, or provide you with additional insights of value.
